This section describes the procedures for enrolment in the qualification, completion of the qualifying exam, deposit of the thesis /dissertation and defence. It is recommended that the student check on his record, in the Janus system, the rules in which he/she is enrolled, the amount of minimum credits required and deadlines, as well as carefully read both the rules of the Program and the Regulations of the Post-Graduation of USP and CPG.
Registration and Qualification Exam
The qualification Exam aims to assess the student’s maturity in the area of knowledge of the Program and it is mandatory for the Master’s, Doctorate and Direct Doctorate students. The Qualification can only be carried out after the fulfilment of the minimum credits required in the Program Regulation.
I. Resgristration: Master’s and Doctorate students must register for the qualifying exam within 18 (eighteen) months and the Direct Doctorate students within 30 (Thirty) months from the first registration in the course. The application to register in the qualification exam, signed by the student or by a regularly appointed attorney and with the express consent of the adviser, must be accompanied by:
● 04 (four) copies of the research project for the production of a dissertation or thesis (check the mandatory components in the Program Regulation).
● Suggestion of composition of the examining committee, signed by the adviser, with the appointment of 2(two) full professors and 2(two) substitute members, all with a minimum degree of doctor (the adviser participates as president, with the right to vote)
● External member Registration form, if the appointed examining member has never participated in Post-Graduation examination boards in the Law School of USP.
II. Exam:
The qualification exam must be carried out within 60 (sixty) days from the date of Registration. The use of videoconferencing, during the exam, is allowed. To schedule:
1. The adviser must agree with the members of the Examining Committee, approved by the Post-Graduation Commission, a date and time for the exam. In the event that the participation of full professors is not possible, substitute members must be convened.
2. The qualification scheduling form must be sent to the Department Secretariat, in accordance with the concentration area, by the adviser or by the student, at least 7 (seven) working days prior to the exam date (students registered in the DINTER, MINTER or in the Human Rights area must send the form to <bancasposfd@usp.br>;
3. The Department secretariat will make the reservation of the room and will communicate the scheduling to the Post-Graduation sector, which will issue the minutes and the statements of participation of the members of the board.
DEPOSIT OF DISSERTATION/THESIS
The Master’s or Doctorate student who has fulfilled the minimum credits required in the Program Regulation must deposit his dissertation/thesis within 36 (thirty-six) months and the Direct Doctorate student within 60 (sixty) months, counted from the first enrolment in the Course. The request for deposit of the dissertation or thesis, signed by the student, or by a regularly appointed attorney and with the express consent of the adviser, must be accompanied by:
Attention: the majority of the examiners, either in the composition of the full professors, or in the composition of the substitutes, must be external examiners to the Post-Graduation Program, and at least one of them must be an external member to the University of São Paulo (USP). It is forbidden the participation of close or distant collateral relatives, up to the fourth degree of both the student and the adviser, as well as of the other members of the judging commission.

From the deposit of the thesis/Dissertation, the CPG has a maximum period of forty-five days to approve the Examining Commission.
DEFENSE
The maximum term for defense of Dissertation or Thesis is limited to one hundred and five days, from the approval of the Examining Commission by the CPG. The use of videoconferencing during the defense of dissertations and thesis is allowed.
I. Scheduling
After the approval of the Board by the CPG:
1. Adviser and student must agree with the members of the Examining Committee, a date and time for the defense of the dissertation/thesis. In the event that the participation of full professors is not possible, substitute members must be convened.
2. The defense scheduling form must be sent to <bancasposfd@usp.br> by the advisor or by the student, at least 30 (thirty) days before the exam date. The participation of members by videoconferencing must be informed in the scheduling form.
3. The secretariat of post-graduation will book the auditorium and will proceed with the publication of the board on the program’s website, as well as it will send a formal summons to the members of the judging committee. The minutes and the statements of participation of the members will be delivered to the president of the board on the day of the examination.
II. Exam
The defense will take place in a public session, such as follows:
Immediately after the end of the argument, each examiner will express his judgement in a secret session, considering the candidate approved or disapproved. The Examining Committee must submit the report of its work to the CPG for approval, which will take place, within forty-five days from the date of the defense.
